introduction to photoshop and illustrator
info
every semester, innovative design hosts the introduction to photoshop and illustrator decal—one of uc berkeley's most popular student-led courses that receives hundreds of applications each semester. the course provides technical foundations in adobe photoshop and illustrator and basic graphic design principles to students with little to no design experience.
in fact, i was a student in this course in fall 2018! (thank you brandon.) this course provided me with an incredible technical foundation, and it was immensely rewarding to see my own technical growth and new creative confidence. the following fall, i became a ta (for brandon!) and proceeded to teach the course in the spring.

course overview
in spring 2020, mihai cipleu and i led a weekly two-hour section of 30 students, where we would walk through a one-hour lesson of how to use the tools in each program and a one-hour tutorial where students would be able to create a full piece utilizing the tools learned in the lesson. students would then complete weekly homework assignments to practice applying the skills learned in class, as well as larger midterm and final projects.
this has been a unique teaching experience for me because it has been incredibly rewarding to see visual and tangible growth in my students and see them develop their own personal styles. by the end of the semester, students who began with little to no experience in these programs were able to create beautiful pieces of work, including album covers, infographics, and more. here are some highlights!
