beam (berkeley engineers and mentors)
background
beam is a student organization that provides science education and mentorship to local elementary and middle school students. by writing our own engaging and hands-on curriculum, providing a small student to mentor ratio, and encouraging problem-based learning, beam hopes to change perceptions of science and engineering—making it more fun and approachable and thus encouraging students of all socioeconomic backgrounds to pursue stem careers.

spring 2020 recruitment
as a designer in the external affairs committee, i was in charge of creating a flyer and accompanying social media graphics to recruit new mentors to beam. in an effort to appeal to college students who genuinely love working with kids and diversify our team of mentors this upcoming semester, i aimed for a more inclusive visual language. rather than relying on science-themed graphics, i focused on the fun and approachable aspect of mentoring kids in STEM, using more organic shapes and colors, a playful font, and overall simplistic style.

fall 2019 recruitment
before i joined external affairs, beam's marketing material was very basic and printed in black & white on plain paper. the overall style was outdated and i felt that it did not adequately identify the organization. therefore, i wanted to utilize my technical skills in graphic design programs to improve beam's image on campus.
for our fall 2019 recruitment, i wanted the visual design to encapsulate our mission statement—approachability and inclusivity in stem for young students. i decided on a bright and lively space theme to highlight the idea of exploration and discovery. through my illustrations, i wanted to feature some of our past lessons/projects, incorporating different areas of science into the overall space theme. using round shapes and bright colors, i aimed to appeal to those who viewed science as fun and approachable and would incorporate this mindset into their mentorship.
attendance for this info session was 40% higher than the past 3 years and we received a record number of applications. seeing the impact of my work was so gratifying and i'm very glad to have helped improve beam's image on campus!
